Geethu Anna Rahul: "I want to be a role model for other youngsters."
John Wooden: “It isn't what you do, but how you do it.”
Vishesh Bhriguvanshi: “I never imagined I’ll be leading the national team.”
Pratham Singh: “My teammates are like my family.”

“As a point guard, I have to control the tempo of the game, make my teammates comfortable on court, and help them to fulfill their roles.”

With the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup around the corner, an incredible opportunity awaits for one Indian player.

For 20-year-old Barkha Sonkar, life seems to have hit a purple patch.

The gritty 158 cm (5ft 2”) Varanasi girl is on an impressive journey stretching from Uttar Pradesh to the United States.

Her next stop will be as a debutant in the Indian senior women’s team.

“As a point guard, I have to control the tempo of the game, make my teammates comfortable on court, and help them to fulfill their roles.”

The 20-year-old speaks with a maturity that belies her age.

“I have experienced and learnt a lot while playing in the United States: how to be mentally strong and how to handle the team in a tough situation,” Sonkar says.

Along with fellow India guard Kavita Akula, Sonkar had trained at the IMG Academy in Florida, before joining the American collegiate circuit.

There is a healthy rapport between Sonkar and Akula. Choosing a starter between the two will be a pleasant problem for head coach Zoran Visic ahead of India’s first game on Sunday.

Sonkar has already represented India at the 2011 FIBA Asia U16 Championship for Women in Jinan Shandong, China, and at the 2014 FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Women in Amman, Jordan, where she averaged 14.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists.

It is time for her to move to the next level.

India is hosting the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup from 23rd to 29th July 2017 in Bengaluru.
